For me, Christmas is a time to be with my family, recharge my batteries, and enjoy some well-earned downtime from the often frenetic pace of life. I have promised myself a digital detox this year, so there will be no social media activity from me between Christmas and the New Year!
However, while I step away from the screen, I will be reflecting on what 2026 holds for Medway Council and the residents I represent in Hempstead and Wigmore. 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal year, and there are five key areas I will be focusing on:
1. The Council Budget & Council Tax
The Council will set the budget in February 2026. While the Government has slightly increased the core grant, residents should still expect a 5% increase in Council Tax. Given the current trajectory, there is a strong likelihood the Council will be forced to borrow again just to balance the books. If you haven’t already, see my previous blog on the state of the Council’s finances for the full picture.
2. Local Government Reorganisation
The roadmap for our move toward a new North Kent Unitary Authority will become much clearer by July 2026. This will involve significant changes, including new arrangements for the May 2027 elections, boundary shifts, and a review of Councillor numbers.
3. Challenging the Local Plan
The Medway Council Local Plan has been delivered to the Planning Inspectorate, with hearings expected to begin in Q1 2026. The Conservative Group will be robustly opposing the Plan on several fronts—most notably the glaring lack of essential infrastructure required to support such large-scale development.
4. Fairview School Street Scheme
I will continue to challenge the Administration on the operation of the School Street Scheme around Fairview Community Primary School. While safety is paramount, the current implementation is causing untold inconvenience to the many older residents living nearby. We need a solution that works for everyone, not just a one-size-fits-all restriction.
5. Seeking Re-selection
Finally, I will be seeking re-selection to represent Hempstead & Wigmore in the new North Kent Authority. My commitment to our community remains my priority, and I hope to continue standing up for our area during this period of transition.
2026 will be a year of significant change for Medway. I hope you will continue to follow my updates, and I encourage you to send me your thoughts using the Contact form on this site.
From my family to yours, a merry Christmas, and a very happy New Year.
Andrew
